The San Francisco 49ers held on in a nail-biting 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals in their home opener at Levi's Stadium. The victory marks the 49ers first 3-0 start since 2023, fueled by clutch defense, RBChristian McCaffrey's versatility, and a game-winning kick from newcomerEddy Pieiro.
Here are five takeaways from the Cardinals-49ers game:
Defense Sets the Tone Early
Defensive linemenNick Bosa,Bryce Huff, and rookieMykel Williamsmade the contest difficult for Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, forcing quick throws and stuffing the run game. Bosa stripped Arizona's RB James Conner on Arizona's second drive, and although the Cardinals recovered, the forced fumble highlighted San Francisco's physicality. The 49ers held Arizona to just six first-half points and Huff capitalized on a drive-ending sack to keep the game within reach.
Ricky PearsallDelivers in Big Moments
The star wideout was a main target for quarterbackMac Jones. He hauled in several key chain-moving catches, including a 34-yard strike in the fourth quarter that set up fullbackKyle Juszczyk's touchdown. Pearsall's mix of precision route-running and reliable hands gave Jones a trusted option when the offense needed a spark.
CMC's Versatility on Display
The All-Pro backChristian McCaffreyremained the engine of the 49ers offense. He posted 52 rushing yards between the tackles and picked up 88 yards as a receiver, including a 20-yard catch in the final drive to set up Pieiro's game-winner.
"He battled," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "He did a lot of good things in the run game and the pass game, but that's how Christian is to me every day of his life. Very grateful to have him."
Resilient Finish After Late Mistakes
The 49ers looked in control after Juszczyk's touchdown made it 13-6, but a few mistakes gave Arizona hope. A defensive pass interference set up a Cardinals score, and Jones was intercepted on the next series. After surrendering a safety, San Francisco trailed 15-13 with under two minutes to play. Jones stepped up and led a march downfield, hittingKendrick Bourne, McCaffrey, and Pearsall before leaving it to Pieiro.
Pieiro Delivers in Home Debut
Pieiro delivered the 49ers biggest kick of the season so far. The veteran went 3-for-3 on field goals, including the 35-yard game-winner as time expired. Pieiro's steady leg was the difference in a one-point game.
The 49ers improve to 3-0 and will play back in Levi's Stadium, hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 27 in Week 4.
