The San Francisco 49ers are deeply saddened by the passing of former linebacker Jim Fahnhorst, who passed away on Wednesday, September 17th at the age of 66.
Fahnhorst was originally drafted in the fourth round (92nd overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1982 NFL Draft before playing two seasons (1983-84) in the USFL and signing with the 49ers as a free agent in 1984. He spent all seven seasons of his NFL career with San Francisco (1984-90), appearing in 82 games (38 starts) and registering 232 tackles, seven interceptions and one sack. He also appeared in six postseason contests (five starts) and registered 17 tackles. Fahnhorst was a contributing member to three Super Bowl Championships (XIX, XXIII and XXIV).
Born James John Fahnhorst in St. Cloud, MN, he attended the University of Minnesota where he earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 1981. He would later earn his degree in psychology at the University of San Francisco in 1988. Jim is the younger brother of former offensive lineman Keith Fahnhorst, who played for the 49ers for 14 seasons (1974-87).
