San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's offseason was filled with milestones, from signing a five-year contract extension in May to welcoming his first child. He announced the birth of his daughter earlier this week, and on Friday, spoke with the media for the first time since becoming a father.
Beaming at the podium, Purdy reflected on life's newest and biggest blessing.
"I still really can't describe it," Purdy said. "Just how awesome it is coming home and seeing little baby girl and holding her and her sleeping on me. There's nothing better. No gift can compare. And seeing Jenna (Purdy) and how she's been awesome as a mom, just all of it all together. It's so good."
Each day of training camp, the quarterback woke up not knowing if that would be the day he'd need to bolt out of the facility. That moment finally came the morning of July 19, when Purdy and his wife, Jenna, welcomed their daughter, Millie, right on her due date.
"I woke up that morning and my wife had her doula over at the house and they were like, 'No, this baby's coming today.' I was like, 'All right.' So, I called, (head coach Kyle) Shanahan and (quarterbacks coach Mick) Lombardi and said, 'Guys, I won't be able to make it. I think it's getting real.' They said, 'Enjoy it and be there for her.' Then sure enough, our baby came that day."
Millie was born at 2:58 p.m., and her name carries a special family touch.
"Her grandma's name is Ludmilla... So, we gave her a little nod and went with Millie."
He's not alone in this new chapter of life. Several of his teammates, includingFred WarnerandChristian McCaffrey, have recently started families of their own. For Purdy, that shared experience makes the moment even more meaningful.
"Christian and I have talked about it in the past, a couple years ago even, how it'd be sweet to have kids remember us playing in the NFL and go to work with dad and this is our work. So, it's pretty cool. Hopefully we can all have our kids grow up together."
Purdy has also leaned on his teammates for dad advice. He credited punterThomas Morstead, father of five, as someone who's helped him think about parenting while playing in the NFL. Warner and offensive linemanJake Brendelhave also shared wisdom with the QB from their own fatherhood experiences.
Purdy returned to the field for the next practice following Millie's birth, and said football has provided the perfect balance in his early days of fatherhood.
"There's so much stuff that has happened in my life off the field for sure, but to come in the building and keep it simple and play football, I feel like it's really good for me. I come here and I get my mind back on what matters and stepping out on the field and competing and playing the game that I love. There's a new goal with a new team this year, so there's a chip on all of our shoulders right now so when I come here to work I hone in on what my job is and it feels good.
"Obviously, when I go home it's great seeing my family too."
